Marilyn and Bill Burnside 1948

Marilyn and Bill Burnside picture 1

Bill Burnside & Marilyn "She was very aware of how she affected men. If I took her to a restaurant, however elegant, the waiters were ready to jump at her bidding. She had it all there, that star quality." ~ Bill Burnside

During 1946 and 1948 Scottish photographer Bill Burnside had the privilege of working with Norma Jeane a few times. He first photographed her in February of 1946 and received her favors, as they made the raw material to sell her image. He was attracted, he said, by "the lost look in the middle of a smile....A kiss took two weeks to achieve. She did not like to be touched too soon."

One familiar, and most remembered, series Burnside took of Marilyn in 1948, often uncredited, has her frolicking on the beach in Santa Monica, California, wearing red shorts and a blue T-shirt.

The first photo below, not taken by Burnside but by photographer Eve Planch in the late 1940's, was given to Bill by Marilyn, and inscribed: "To Bill, Anything worth having is worth waiting for! Love Marilyn."

I don't mind making jokes, but I don't want to look like one. Read more Marilyn Monroe quotes
